Walk 11 –Moturua Island Sailing aboard the Tall Ship R Tucker Thompson
Saturday 11th October
Join us aboard the R. Tucker Thompson, a stunning gaff-rigged schooner rich in its own unique history. Whether you’re keen to take the helm, help hoist the sails, climb the rigging, or simply relax and soak in the action and breathtaking scenery of the Bay of Islands, the choice is yours.
Our voyage leads to Moturua Island, where you’ll disembark for an incredible walk filled with
prolific birdlife and rich history. Many of the island’s beaches hold unique archaeological significance, including one of the earliest known Polynesian landing sites. Archaeological digs have uncovered artefacts dating back to around 1320.
Moturua Island is steeped in history, having hosted early French explorers, operated as a key farming hub supplying milk to the mainland, and played a significant role in defence with a network of bunkers, barracks, and a water reservoir.
As you walk enjoy the island’s abundant birdlife, native bush and stunning panoramic views.
Bring your own lunch, and afternoon snacks. There is a licensed cash bar on board with local wines and beers for the journey home.
